Eastcliff is an ancient seat, built on the jagged cliffs where the southern and eastern shorelines meet. The wetlands lie to the north, a tangled maze of swamps and sinkholes. There is a small, but well fortified outpost guarding the main pathway leading from the castle to the morass. The garrison there serves as an advanced guard, stopping all who travel along the soggy paths leading out of the murky swamp. To west lies the road to Kirkwall and a gentle rolling plain. These plains are what feed Eastcliff and have done so for hundreds of years, if not more.
During the early days of the rebellion, Eastcliff's lord was a staunch supporter of the Empire. But then came the fall of the Iron Keep and the duchy of Damongarde fell into disarray and rebellion. Eastcliff's lord hesitated, wavering between loyalty to a faltering empire and hoping to make peace with an emerging, but uncertain new future. He played both sides … badly. And that is when the rebellion sent Geryon Tyrikk to Eastcliff. The mercenary's loyalty to the cause was far from a certain thing, but he his role in the fall of the Iron Keep ensured that he had no friends in the Empire and he had proven capable. Eastcliff was prominent enough that the rebellion felt it was worth securing, but far enough away from the main action that it was not critical to their efforts. The perfect place to send an up jumped mercenary with more ambition than scruples.
Eastcliff's former ruling house has been extinguished. Some killed in the campaign, others unceremoniously executed in the aftermath. Lord Geryon sits upon his seat and continues to add to his house, recruiting more men to his banner everyday and knighting several men who reportedly are seasoned men of war, but notoriously of low character. Up jumped sell swords that now call themselves knights thanks to another up jumped sell sword that now calls himself lord. Rumors swirl about Lord Tyrikk's intentions .. that title still sticking in the throats of many nobles and men of high birth. But his subjects seem content with his rule. Peace and order have come to Eastcliff. Taxes are reasonable and the new lord's brand of justice is both swift and pragmatic. Some say all Lord Tyrikk needs to completely seal his hold on the seat is an heir.
